3151. Hence a certain inexpressible state was produced with those who had been close [in the world], from the thought whether such a state would come forth of filial reverence toward parents, that is, whether a like state would be in reverence, shame, together with fear, involving submissiveness to parents. Such was their state (which can never be grasped by any mortal), formed from various elements of their character. 1748, 14 Sept.
